ETH Zurich and Springer Nature expand open access journal agreement -

After intensive discussions with the publisher Springer Nature, the swissuniversities negotiation delegation announced the conclusion of a new consortium agreement.

The agreement enables ETH Zurich members to publish in both hybrid and Gold Open Access journals from Springer Nature. Alongside continued access to the full Springer portfolio, the deal now includes comprehensive access to the Nature Research portfolio. Previously, only selected titles were available. The package also extends to selected titles from Nature Reviews and provides access to Scientific American.

For authors, the publication process will remain largely unchanged. Articles accepted in hybrid Springer Nature journals before the agreement’s conclusion in 2026 that were initially published under Closed Access will be converted to Open Access retroactively. Details of this conversion will be shared on the ETH Library’s Open Access Wiki under Springer Nature once available.

The ETH Library indicated that it remains available to provide support and respond to questions.

Additional information about the negotiations can be found on the swissuniversities website and the Consortium of Swiss Academic Libraries website.
