JMIR Publications has entered into a partnership with the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School (UMass Chan) to provide unlimited open access publishing through an institutional subscription. The agreement, funded by the Lamar Soutter Library at UMass Chan, replaces individual article processing fees with a single institutional payment. It allows UMass Chan researchers to publish without cost in more than 30 of JMIR’s Gold Open Access journals. The arrangement applies to eligible articles accepted between July 1, 2026, and June 30, 2027.
Dennis O’Brien, Vice President of Communications and Partnerships at JMIR Publications, explained that welcoming UMass Chan into the institutional partnership program reflects a commitment to reducing financial barriers for researchers. He noted that the Lamar Soutter Library’s participation demonstrates support for independent, scholar‑led publishing and contributes to a more equitable open science environment.
Rebecca Gerber, Electronic Resources Librarian at the Lamar Soutter Library, stated that the library’s mission is to connect the community with knowledge that advances research and improves health outcomes. She emphasized that the partnership removes financial obstacles to open access publishing, protects academic freedom, and ensures that UMass Chan’s digital health research is freely accessible worldwide.
JMIR Publications highlighted that its open access publishing subscriptions are designed to expand opportunities and increase equity for researchers wherever they are implemented.
