DORA has released the Portuguese translation of the Practical Guide to Implementing Responsible Research Assessment at Research Funding Organizations (RFO Guide). The resource is designed to support research funders in aligning evaluation processes and funding policies with principles of quality, equity, integrity, openness, and societal impact. The translation aims to help organizations across the Lusophone world adapt responsible research assessment (RRA) practices to their institutional and cultural contexts.
The Portuguese edition was launched on July 29, 2026, during the III Encontro da Comunidade Métricas at the Escola Superior de Agricultura Luiz de Queiroz (ESALQ/USP) in Piracicaba, Brazil. The translation was coordinated by Projeto Métricas under Professor Jacques Marcovitch, with support from the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP). The guide was originally developed in English in May 2026 by DORA, the Global Research Council RRA Working Group, and Science Europe.
The launch formed part of ESALQ’s 125th anniversary celebrations and included discussions on the future of research assessment, responsible use of artificial intelligence, and multidimensional approaches to evaluating scientific, social, economic, and environmental contributions of research. Representatives from universities, funding agencies, and research organizations across Brazil and other Portuguese‑speaking countries participated.
Speakers from CAPES and FAPESP emphasized that the translation reflects a cultural and qualitative shift in research assessment, connecting global principles to local reform agendas. The initiative builds on earlier efforts, including the Portuguese translation of DORA’s guide for research performing organizations and the accompanying white paper released in December 2026.
By providing a shared framework and vocabulary, the Portuguese RFO Guide supports nearly 700 professionals within Projeto Métricas and broader Lusophone communities in Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, and Portugal. It is intended to serve as a practical tool for funding agencies, administrators, and research managers seeking to implement systemic change in assessment practices.
The translation was made possible through the partnership with Projeto Métricas, coordinated by Professor Jacques Marcovitch.
