IOF appoints René Rizzoli as Editor‑in‑Chief of Osteoporosis International European Office -

The International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) has announced the appointment of Professor René Rizzoli as the next Editor‑in‑Chief for the European Office of Osteoporosis International and Archives of Osteoporosis, effective September 1, 2026.

Professor Rizzoli, MD, is an internist and endocrinologist specializing in metabolic bone diseases, osteoporosis, and disorders of mineral metabolism. He is Emeritus Professor of Medicine at the University Hospitals of Geneva, where he previously served as Head of the Service of Bone Diseases and Chair of the Department of Rehabilitation and Geriatrics. He has also chaired the IOF Committee of Scientific Advisors and currently leads the Scientific Advisory Board of the European Society for Clinical and Economic Aspects of Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis, and Musculoskeletal Diseases (ESCEO).

With prior editorial roles including Editor‑in‑Chief of Calcified Tissue International, editor of BONE, and Associate Editor of Osteoporosis International, Professor Rizzoli brings extensive editorial experience and a longstanding commitment to scientific excellence. In his new role, he will collaborate with the U.S. Editor‑in‑Chief (appointed by the Bone Health and Osteoporosis Foundation), the Editorial Board, authors, reviewers, and IOF.

He succeeds Professor John A. Kanis, who has served as Editor‑in‑Chief of the European Office since 2008. Over 18 years, Professor Kanis played a central role in strengthening the journal’s international standing, attracting high‑quality research globally, and establishing its reputation as a leading publication in the field.

IOF President Professor Nicholas Harvey expressed gratitude to Professor Kanis for his leadership and dedication, noting that his vision helped shape Osteoporosis International into one of the foremost journals in osteoporosis and metabolic bone disease. He added that IOF looks forward to working with Professor Rizzoli, whose clinical expertise, research background, and editorial leadership position him to guide the journal into its next phase.
