De Gruyter Brill and the Max Planck Society (MPG) have entered into a two‑year read‑and‑publish agreement. Under this arrangement, all 85 institutes of the Max Planck Society will have unrestricted access to De Gruyter Brill’s full journal portfolio, which includes imprints such as De Gruyter Oldenbourg, De Gruyter Mouton, Brill Fink, and brill mentis, totaling approximately 800 journals.
The agreement also allows Max Planck Society researchers to publish without restrictions in all hybrid, gold open access, and subscribe‑to‑open journals from De Gruyter Brill, with no costs to authors. Based on the publisher’s All Inclusive model, the agreement provides institutions with complete access to the journal portfolio and unlimited open access publishing rights across disciplines and open access models. This approach supports the broader transition to open access publishing.
Both organizations described the agreement as part of their commitment to open science. It establishes a framework for Max Planck Society research to be published freely and made accessible worldwide.
Ádám Dér, Head of Scientific Information Provision at the Max Planck Digital Library, stated that the contract expands services for MPG scientists by strengthening both reading access and open access publishing. He noted that the partnership is particularly significant in the humanities and social sciences, aligning with the Max Planck Society’s open access strategy.
Ben Ashcroft, Chief Commercial Officer at De Gruyter Brill, emphasized that open access transformation is central to the publisher’s mission of making science more accessible. He indicated that the partnership with the Max Planck Society represents an important milestone, making it easier for MPG researchers to read and publish open access content with De Gruyter Brill.
