JMIR Metascience and Research Integrity has announced a call for papers for a new e‑collection examining misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation in scholarly publishing. The initiative highlights growing concerns about compromised peer review, manipulated data, misleading abstracts, predatory publishing, citation manipulation, paper mills, and misuse of artificial intelligence tools within the research life cycle. These practices pose risks to the credibility of science and may have downstream consequences for public trust, clinical practice, and health policy.
The rapid pace of scholarly communication, combined with evolving publishing models such as preprints and open peer review, has amplified these challenges. Dissemination through social media and journalistic platforms increases the risk of unvalidated or misleading content spreading widely. At the same time, publishers and institutions are developing governance models, detection tools, educational frameworks, and policy interventions to address these threats.
The e‑collection will welcome submissions that propose, evaluate, or critically examine solutions and mitigation strategies across the publishing ecosystem. Eligible formats include original research, systematic reviews, scoping reviews, policy analyses, balanced viewpoints, research letters, and tutorials.
Topics of interest include mechanisms by which inaccurate content enters and persists in the scientific record, approaches for detection and correction, the role of preprints in public understanding, examination of publishing practices that contribute to misinformation, governance and policy solutions, and the impact of social media and science communication on amplifying misleading claims.
Submissions must be made through JMIR Metascience and Research Integrity by selecting “Misinformation in Scientific Publishing” from the section drop‑down list. All manuscripts will undergo peer review, and accepted articles will be published open access. Authors may also choose to make their work available immediately in JMIR Preprints with a DOI.
