MDPI relaunches Journal of Interdisciplinary Research Applied to Medicine -

MDPI has acquired and relaunched the Journal of Interdisciplinary Research Applied to Medicine (JDReAM), which had been dormant since 2021. The publisher released the first issue in March, with Volume 6, Issue 3 expected later this month.

Established in 2017, JDReAM is the official journal of the Interdisciplinary Laboratory of Applied Research in Medicine (DReAM) at the University of Salento, in collaboration with the Local Health Authority of Lecce. The journal was temporarily discontinued in 2021 due to editorial and organizational restructuring, with plans to reintroduce it under a broader international publishing framework. It is currently led by Editors‑in‑Chief Prof. Michele Maffia and Prof. Prisco Piscitelli of DReAM.

JDReAM publishes research addressing human health and disease from complementary perspectives, including biomedical sciences, health education, philosophy, engineering, big data for health, health economics, and law.

According to Dimensions.ai, more than 68% of research outputs in Italy were published in open access in 2025, totaling over 124,300 papers. The collaboration between JDReAM and MDPI reflects the growing demand for open access publishing services in Italy, supported by the country’s academic community.

To date, MDPI has published more than 168,600 articles affiliated with Italian institutions, with over 143,400 indexed in Web of Science and 147,500 in Scopus. The publisher also collaborates with 12,677 editorial board members from Italian institutions, including 92 Editors‑in‑Chief and 247 section Editors‑in‑Chief.
