Nominations open for 2027 APE Award for Innovation in Scholarly Communication -

Digital Science and the Berlin Institute for Scholarly Publishing (BISP) have opened nominations for the 2027 Academic Publishing in Europe (APE) Award for Innovation in Scholarly Communication.

Now in its fifth year, the award will be presented during the 22nd APE Conference in Berlin, scheduled for January 11–13, 2027. It recognizes individuals who have introduced innovation in scholarly communication that benefits research and the academic publishing community. The recipient will receive a €1,000 prize, along with travel support and complimentary attendance at the conference.

The deadline for nominations is Friday, November 27, 2026. Application details are available through the organizers.

Since its inception, the award has honored a range of innovators working to improve scholarly communication. Past recipients include:

• Vsevolod Solovyov (2023) for developing an online platform that recommends grant reviewers to the European Research Council.

• Laura Feetham‑Walker (2024) for advancing peer review through training and certification.

• Dr. Raym Crow (2025) for pioneering sustainable, mission‑driven open publishing models.

• Dr. Anita Bandrowski (2026) for her work on RRIDs and SciScore, improving research rigor and transparency across more than 2,000 journals worldwide.
