The Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining (IOM3) has announced the appointment of new members to its Scholarly Publications Committee (SPC). The SPC provides strategic, non‑executive guidance for the institute’s scholarly publishing program, which includes 16 peer‑reviewed journals managed by IOM3 and its partners.
The IOM3 Nominations Committee, following a recommendation from the Commercial Activities Board, confirmed the appointment of four new members:
Dr Albertus Denny Handoko FIMMM – Senior Scientist at the Institute of Sustainability for Chemicals, Energy and Environment (ISCE2), part of A*STAR in Singapore. Dr Handoko has more than 20 years of experience in interdisciplinary materials and catalysis research, with expertise in hydrothermal synthesis, plasma deposition, and electrochemistry. His current work focuses on electrochemical transformation of organic compounds and CO₂ utilization. He has published over 85 papers with more than 12,000 citations and has been recognized among the top 2% cited scientists globally from 2020 to 2025. He joined the editorial board of Environmental Science and Technology in 2025 and was awarded Fellowship of IOM3 in 2026.
Dr Barry Twomey MIMMM – A mechanical engineer with a PhD in Surface Engineering from University College Dublin. Dr Twomey has worked across medical device and aerospace sectors, with expertise in surface science and material analysis. He has contributed as a reviewer for several journals and became a Professional Member of IOM3 in 2022.
Dr Yu Dong FIMMM – Associate Professor in Mechanical Engineering at Curtin University, Australia, with visiting and adjunct appointments in Japan and Indonesia. Dr Dong’s research covers polymer nanocomposites, shape memory materials, additive manufacturing, recycling, and AI applications in materials science. He has published over 120 SCI‑indexed articles and 13 technical books. He serves as Associate Editor and Editorial Board Member for multiple international journals and has received awards including the James S Walker Award (2023) and recognition in Stanford University’s list of the world’s top 2% scientists in polymer materials.
Brian Li MIMMM – A scholarly publishing professional with experience in editorial development, research integrity, and science communication. He previously worked at the Royal Society of Chemistry and is active in international publishing organizations, including the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry and the Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers. His interests include editorial innovation, responsible use of AI, and strengthening connections between publishing and scientific communities.
The SPC members will contribute to enhancing the journal portfolio of IOM3, which spans disciplines from composites and corrosion to mining and tribology.
