The OAPEN Foundation has announced a partnership with the Max Planck Society (MPG) to develop a collection of open access books authored by researchers from more than 80 Max Planck Institutes and facilities.
The institutes cover a wide range of disciplines, from the natural sciences to the humanities. The collection will provide both the public and the Max Planck Society with a comprehensive overview of open access books funded either by individual institutes or centrally through the Max Planck Digital Library (MPDL). Max Planck authors are expected to benefit from broader dissemination of their open access works.
This collaboration represents a milestone in extending OAPEN’s services beyond research funders to include research institutions, offering them improved oversight of their open access book publications and related funding activities. It also reflects the shared commitment of OAPEN and MPG to enhance the visibility, discoverability, and long‑term accessibility of open access books within the open science ecosystem in Germany and internationally.
OAPEN’s services for research funders help implement open access policies for scholarly books by ensuring that funded publications are openly accessible, widely disseminated, and preserved for the long term. Current partners include the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), the Netherlands Research Council (NWO), the European Union (EU), the German Research Foundation (DFG), Knowledge Unlatched (KU), SCOAP3 for Books, the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), and Wellcome.
