EIFL has launched Good Practice in Action: A Toolkit for Diamond OA Journals, a new resource designed to help editors, publishers, and journal managers improve the quality, transparency, and visibility of Diamond Open Access (OA) journals.
The toolkit brings together three complementary resources:
• Quality in Diamond Open Access Publishing: Provides guidelines, policy templates, and technical recommendations for journal websites, licensing, accessibility, and publishing practices.
• Auditing Framework for Diamond Open Access Journals (2026): A spreadsheet-based tool that helps journals and institutions assess publishing standards and website quality.
• Let's Do It Right: Fixing Common Issues in Diamond Open Access Journals (2026): Offers practical guidance for resolving issues that affect transparency, discoverability, and indexing eligibility.
Designed to be used together, the resources help journals evaluate their current practices, implement improvements, and address common publishing challenges. The toolkit can also support institutions, libraries, and publishing units managing multiple journals by providing a consistent framework for assessment and development.
The toolkit was developed through the Collaboration for Sustainable Open Access Publishing in Africa project, funded by the Wellcome Trust. Input from the No-Fee Open Access Publishing in Africa Community of Practice helped ensure the resources address the real-world needs of journal editors and publishing organizations.
While developed within an African publishing initiative, the toolkit is intended for use by Diamond Open Access journals and publishing organizations worldwide.
