Wiley expands IR, Raman, and SmartSpectra libraries to support analytical research -

Wiley has announced the expansion of its spectral libraries across IR and Raman, adding both empirical and computed reference data in areas such as forensics, pigments and dyes, mineralogy, materials, polymers, and pharmaceuticals. The release includes more than a thousand new empirical reference spectra and over 429,000 new SmartSpectra records, bringing the combined collections to more than 1.4 million IR spectra and 230,000 Raman spectra.

The update introduces new databases and expanded coverage across multiple domains. In forensics, a Raman database adds spectra for colorant and dye identification on textiles, supporting fiber‑evidence investigations. Pigments and dyes coverage has been broadened with new Raman and IR data, including historic artists’ pigments for art conservation and cultural heritage authentication. Mineral data has been extended with additions from Wiley’s collaboration with the American Museum of Natural History, cross-referenced with DANA Classification Numbers and Mindat IDs to aid identification.

Materials and semiconductor data now include crystal growth relevant to battery research, rare‑earth‑doped magnetic crystals, and flexible and 2D semiconductor materials. Polymer data has been expanded to cover 3D‑printed microlattices, recycled PET, food packaging plastics, and synthetic polymer types for identifying microplastics in environmental samples. Clinical and pharmaceutical data additions include antibiotic classes, bone mineralization studies, and spectra for common over‑the‑counter medications such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and acetaminophen, supporting faster quality control verification.

SmartSpectra collections have also grown significantly, with more than 243,000 IR, 67,000 Raman, and 119,000 vapor‑phase IR computed reference spectra added to support high‑throughput identification.

The expanded spectral libraries are now available, with guidance for subscribers on updating their databases provided through Wiley’s support resources.
