The Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) and Open Access Australasia (OAA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to support trusted, equitable, and sustainable open access journal publishing across Australasia.
The agreement establishes a framework for collaboration aimed at improving the recognition, quality, visibility, and long-term sustainability of open access journals, including Diamond open access and institutionally supported publishing models.
Under the partnership, the two organizations will collaborate on advocacy, capacity-building, and knowledge-sharing initiatives to help journals and institutions meet recognized standards for quality, transparency, and research integrity. They will also promote the importance of open scholarly infrastructure and explore opportunities to strengthen sustainable national and regional infrastructure for Diamond open access publishing across Australasia.
Joanna Ball, Managing Director of DOAJ, explained that the organizations had worked with OAA and the Australasian library community for several years before formalizing their collaboration. She described OAA's role in connecting and supporting the regional open access community and emphasized that the partnership would support the growth and long-term sustainability of Diamond open access publishing across Australasia.
Janet Catterall, Program Manager at OAA, emphasized the importance of trusted, community-governed open infrastructure in establishing an equitable scholarly communication system. She pointed to DOAJ's contribution to improving the discoverability and global recognition of quality open access journals. Catterall further explained that the partnership would focus on building the capacity, visibility, and long-term sustainability of journal publishers across Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand, while connecting regional initiatives with broader international efforts to promote equitable open publishing.
