ALPSP workshop on effective market research strategies

The Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers (ALPSP) will hold a residential workshop on December 7-8, 2005 in London to teach publishing professionals the basics of developing effective marketing techniques. The focus of the workshop is on building a strategic framework for effective market research, the comparative pros and cons of qualitative and quantitative research, the various techniques of conducting such research, the available research channels and methods to evaluate the results. The workshop principally targets professionals in the scholarly books and journals publishing industry. Editorial and marketing staff, who are involved in formulating pricing and product proposals based on market research, may also participate.

INIST to host seventh international conference on grey literature

The Institute for Scientific and Technical Information (INIST) will host ‘The Seventh International Conference on Grey Literature’ (GL7) on December 5-6, 2005 at Nancy, France. INIST, a unit of the French National Centre for Scientific Research, and indexes literature related to science, technology, medicine, humanities and social sciences.

DASER Summit postponed to December

Digital Archives for Science & Engineering Resources (DASER) has postponed the DASER-2 Summit to December 2-4, 2005. The summit, to take place at College Park, Maryland, brings together key players in STM publishing to discuss issues regarding digital libraries, institutional repositories and open access publishing. Jan Velterop, Publisher, BioMed Central, will be the main speaker of the event. The meet will be of particular interest to science and engineering librarians, STM publishers, systems librarians, database and digital library professionals and managers of STM collections. The sponsors of the event are the American Society for Information Science & Technology, the Scientific and Technical Information Systems Special Interest Group and the Potomac Valley Chapter.

Gilbane conference on content technologies for enterprises

The Gilbane Report and Lighthouse Seminars will hold a conference on content management technologies in Boston on November 29-December 1, 2005. The event will focus on the widely available content management and enterprise search technologies for enterprise applications. Seminar on how preprint repositories affect publishing

The Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers (ALPSP) and the Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP) will conduct a seminar on preprint repositories on November 28, 2005, in London. Speakers will discuss and review the impact of preprint repositories on journal publishing. The content that is deposited in the repositories and the role of authors and institutions in preprint repositories will be analysed.

ALPSP training in publishing contracts

The Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers (ALPSP) will conduct a course on publishing contracts on November 22, 2005 in London. The course will focus on the various difficulties of publishing agreements, copyright and contracts, grants of rights, obligations, and indemnities and ancillary contracts among many other legal issues that typically confront a publisher. The course will seek to guide participants in understanding and finalising publishing contracts. It targets professionals handling acquisitions, editorials, commissioning, rights & licensing and contracts.

preserving and adding value to scientific data

The PV 2005 conference on preserving and adding value to scientific data in the long run will be held at the Royal Society, Edinburgh from November 21-25, 2005. This year’s conference will be the third in a series that began in France in 2002. In addition to preserving content, issues pertaining to the methodological, technological, economic and standardising prospects of this field will be discussed. The Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers (ALPSP) will hold a training course on November 15, 2005 in London on the strategies for individual journal development in a market. The course will focus on the volatile market characteristics that publishers have to cope with to supply material for and develop journals. It will recommend tools to measure the current status of a journal and the means to improve it. The course is targeted at top editorial professionals, such as managing editors, who are immediately involved in developing their respective journals.

The Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers (ALPSP) will conduct a course on November 8, 2005 in London on the latest trends in the journals market and the means to adopt marketing theories. It will discuss the interactions in the dynamic market between players including academics, publishers, subscription agents and libraries; the processes in evolving marketing plans; and the use and availability of marketing kits. Marketing professionals, both freshers and experienced, can attend the course.

ASIS&T to hold annual meet on integrating knowledge

The American Society for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T) will conduct its annual meeting titled ‘Sparking Synergies: Bringing Research and Practice Together @ ASIST '05’ on October 28-November 2, 2005 at Charlotte, North Carolina, US. The event will emphasise the need to integrate practical and theoretical knowledge with hands-on experience. With content contribution from information science professionals and researchers, the meet will discuss the overlap among subjects such as behavioural science, communications, computer science, sociology and biomedical sciences. Society of Editors to host National Editors Conference

The Society of Editors will host the second National Council of Australian Editors (CASE) conference from 13 – 15 October, 2005. The conference highlights editing as a profession and analyzes public perception of editors. The conference calls for papers to be submitted in full by September 9, 2005.

Digital Curation Centre (DCC) will be conducting a workshop on the long-term securing and curation of scientific databases at the Calouste Gulbenkain Institute, Lisbon, on October 13-14, 2005. The Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers (ALPSP), in association with Unwin Brothers Ltd., will conduct a training session at Old Woking, Surrey, on October 6, 2005, covering all the factors in manufacturing print journals. The topics include proofing, offprints, relationship with supplier and computer-to-plate. The training aims to enable participants to take production decisions on their own to produce journals cost-effectively.

Max Planck Society to organise conference on open access

The Max Planck Society will organise the ‘International conference on open access within the tradition of the Berlin Declaration’ on October 5-7, 2005 at the Albert Einstein Institute, Golm, Germany. The conference will be attended by key players in the open access movement. Topics such as "open access for cultural heritage", "open access to scientific (raw) data" and "legal issues of open access" will be presented.

Training to enhance online services

The Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers (ALPSP) will conduct a training course in London on October 4, 2005 to impart technical the know-how on maintaining an online platform that enables effective online services. The participants, primarily non-technical staff, will be familiarised with the knowledge and skills required to provide result-oriented online services. The course will focus on industry best practices for designing web interfaces, using and testing paper prototyping designs for online services and using the ‘persona’ strategy to model the typical users of the online services.

Forum on scholarly communications in Australia

The 2005 National Scholarly Communications Forum will be held at the State Library of NSW, Sydney on September 27. The theme of the event is ‘Open Access, Open Archives and Open Source’, with participation from Australian and international professionals and policy-makes. John Unsworth, professor at the University of Illinois and Chairman of the American Council of Learned Societies Commission on Cyber Infrastructure for the Humanities and Social Sciences, will give the keynote presentation. The Aslib Knowledge and Information Management Network will organise an Open Meeting on September 20, 2005 at the Patent Office in London. The speaker and facilitator of the event, Linda Wishart, will present ‘Practical experience of implementing KM during changing times’. The US’ National Information Standards Organization (NISO) has organised a workshop on OpenURL and Metasearch on September 19-21, 2005 at the AED Conference Center in Washington, DC. Aslib event on full-text bibliographic databases

The Aslib Engineering Group will conduct an event on September 8, 2005 in London to analyse the current and potential improvements in full-text linking bibliographic databases. Company representatives will demonstrate engineering products such as Elsevier’s Engineering Village 2 and the Web of Science and Thomson’s Scopus. Issues such as the future status of bibliographic databases, the advantages of large-scale multidisciplinary resources over small-scale resources and the possible role of indexing and funding for library managers to provide access to various e-sources will be examined. These are discussed against the current significance that search engines have as the first resort for obtaining information.

International workshop on e-science issues and policies

An international workshop titled “Creating the Information Commons for e-Science: Toward Institutional Policies and Guidelines for Action” will be conducted on September 1-2, 2005 at the Unesco Headquarters, Paris. The workshop will review the possibilities and challenges in creating e-science in the Internet Age. It will also examine the federal and academic procedures in the US, the EU and a few developing nations to manage public scientific content and the merits and demerits of open access to scientific information.
The workshop is organised by Unesco, the Committee on Data for Science and Technology (CODATA), the International Council for Scientific and Technical Information (ICSTI), the International Network for the Availability of Scientific Publications (INASP), the International Council for Science (ICSU) and the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS).

Seminar on the role of XML in scholarly and professional publishing

The Association of American Publishers Journals Committee is organising a seminar on August 18, 2005 in New York to discuss the importance of XML in professional and scholarly publishing. Topics for discussion include the role of XML in editing, production, marketing and access. IFLA conducts conference on open access

The IFLA sections of Health and Biosciences Libraries and Science and Technology Libraries are conducting a conference on August 13, 2005 in Oslo. Various events of the seminar will be chaired by Bruce Madge of the IFLA Health and Biosciences Libraries Section, Julia Gelfand of the IFLA Science and Technology Libraries Section and Arne Jakobsson of University of Oslo Library, Library of Medicine and Health Sciences. The seminar will debate on issues of scholarly communication and open access, archiving of NIH (the US’ National Institutes of Health) research findings, publication policy of CERN, the research institutions that support open access, current technologies, Oxford University’s open access initiatives, current trends in scholarly communication and future perspectives of institutional repositories.

Workshops on open access in Australia

Co-operative Action by Victorian Academic Libraries workshops are on since August 12, 2005 in Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney and Adelaide. The workshops, conducted by Colin Steele, an emeritus fellow at the Australian National University, seek to spread awareness about the open access scenario in Australia. The topics include best practices in scholarly communication change and open access, advocacy programmes and citation models.

Infotrieve participates in IQPC Electronic Laboratory Notebooks conference

Infotrieve, US, conducts a conference at the International Quality and Productivity Center (IQPC) Electronic Laboratory Notebooks conference to demonstrate its recent launch, Infotrieve/ELN. The conference takes place on July 5-6 in Munich and on July 26-27 in Boston.

The Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) will hold an international forum to debate existing and possible improvements in the scholarly communication environment. Mark Logic conducts webinar on search applications

Mark Logic, a member of the National Federation of Abstracting and Information Services (NFAIS), will conduct a webinar on June 14, 2005 on the use of XML and XQuery in applications related to online search and content. The Joint Conference of Digital Libraries (JCDL) is conducting a workshop titled ‘7th Networked Knowledge Organization Systems (NKOS)’ in Denver on June 7-11, 2005. The Special Libraries Association (SLA) conducts its annual conference in Toronto, Canada on June 5-8, 2005. The European Association of Scientific Editors (EASE) will organise a seminar titled ‘Habits in Science Communication and Science Publishing’ on April 29, 2005. This will be followed by the Annual General Assembly of EASE in Spain. The seminar covers issues such as understanding, writing, reading, seeking and review of scientific publications.

SSP conducts online seminar on marketing techniques for scholarly publications

The Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP) is conducting an online seminar on April 26, 2005. The 90-minute seminar will suggest effective online marketing techniques for scholarly journals and books. An online demonstration of successful marketing tools and campaigns will also take place. Judith Barnsby, Institute of Physics; Duncan Humphrey, Oxford University Press, and Matthew J. Price, American Chemical Society Publications, will speak on the occasion.

ISMPP conducts first annual meet

The International Society for Medical Publication Professionals (ISMPP), a non-profit association, will conduct its first annual meeting on April 25, 2005 in New Jersey, US. The meeting, titled ‘Driving the Value of Publications: An Integrated Approach’, will discuss publication planning and execution with special attention on clinical trial registries. Representatives from the pharmaceutical industry, including publishers, drug firms and agencies, will participate in the meeting.

STM Spring Conference on digital access in Washington

The STM Spring Conference on optimising access in the electronic era will be held on April 21-22, 2005 in Washington D. C. Speakers include Dr. John H. Conference on communicating STM information in Belgium

The Royal Library, the Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers, the European Association of Information Services and IOS Press Scientific Publishing are organising a conference on April 19, 2005 at Belgium’s Royal Library.
The conference, titled ‘Communicating Scientific, Technical and Medical knowledge 2005-2010’, will be attended by scientists, publishers, intermediaries and libraries who play key roles in the STM publishing market. Some of the discussion topics are: Libraries as knowledge centres, What the STM academic community actually wants, The economic and technical evolution of the scientific publication market and communicating scientific information, cornerstone of the European Union’s science policy.

Gilbane Conference on content management

Seminar on future of scholarly e-publishing

A seminar on ‘The Web and after: the future of scholarly e-publishing’, is to be held as part of the 21st International Learned Journals Seminar on April 8, 2005. The event will take place in the Royal College of Nursing, London. The seminar will focus on the transformation of work and communication models by scholars for a faster and better information model. Alan Singleton, Institution of Mechanical Engineers; Simeon Warner, Information Science, Cornell University and Sue Corbett, Director of Science/Academic journals, Blackwell Publishing, are some of the speakers of the day.

Forum to discuss open access publishing

JHU Libraries, in association with the University of Maryland’s Health Sciences and Human Services Library, is organising a discussion forum titled ‘Impact of Ownership and Access in Scholarly Publishing’. The event will take place on April 6, 2005 at Maryland’s School of Nursing Auditorium. David Lipman, Director of the National Institutes of Health’s National Center for Biotechnology Information will give the keynote talk.
