About a year ago, when countries across Europe entered lockdown, a dedicated European COVID-19 data platform was launched. The platform enables the rapid collection and sharing of research data from different sources for the European and global research communities. It also allows researchers to openly share and analyse data in a secure way by using their institutional credentials. The fact that it was possible to develop this platform so rapidly was primarily due to two factors: while urgency and necessity was a key catalyst, the foundational building blocks were already in place.
