The Company of Biologists is celebrating a major milestone as it announces that 1,000 institutions in 53 countries are now part of its Read & Publish Open Access (OA) initiative. This cost-neutral program, which is set to mark its 100th anniversary in 2025, continues to grow steadily, with recent agreements including renewals with BIBSAM, CAUL, and Jisc.
The initiative has gained significant traction worldwide, with strong growth in Europe, Asia, and North America. In Europe, regions such as Germany, Italy, and Spain have seen notable increases, aided by consortium support. Meanwhile, in Asia, countries like Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and China have expanded their participation through agreements with organizations like JUSTICE and KESLI. The initiative has also seen progress in developing economies through its partnership with EIFL.
The success of this initiative has led to an increase in Open Access content in the Company’s journals, such as Development, Journal of Cell Science, and Journal of Experimental Biology. Additionally, nearly all participating libraries have opted to include the fully OA journals Disease Models & Mechanisms and Biology Open in their Read & Publish agreements for 2025. This expansion allows corresponding authors at participating institutions to publish an unlimited number of OA articles without incurring Article Processing Charges (APCs).
This milestone not only supports the Open Access movement but also makes high-quality research more accessible to institutions around the globe.
