AASM names Safwan Badr as next editor of the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine -

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) Board of Directors has appointed Dr. Safwan Badr as the third Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine. His five-year term will commence on January 1, 2025.

The Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine serves as the authoritative source for AASM clinical practice guidelines, position statements, peer-reviewed sleep and circadian research, systematic reviews, commentaries, and editorials. Earlier this year, the AASM Board of Directors approved a new strategic vision for the journal. Dr. Badr will be responsible for advancing its reputation as the leading publication in human sleep and circadian science, expanding its influence within academic and clinical medicine, and ensuring its continued relevance to the sleep and circadian science community.

Dr. Badr, a past president of the AASM (2013-2014), currently serves as Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, Michigan. He is also a professor of internal medicine and physiology, a staff physician at the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center, and Chief Clinical Officer of the Wayne State University Physician Group.

A highly regarded physician-scientist and research mentor, Dr. Badr specializes in sleep-disordered breathing, central sleep apnea, and spinal cord injury. He has secured funding from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the National Institutes of Health, and his research has been cited over 31,000 times. Dr. Badr also brings editorial experience from his roles as an associate editor for the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Respirology, and the Journal of Spinal Cord Medicine.

The Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine was first published in 2005 under the leadership of founding Editor-in-Chief Dr. Stuart Quan, who served for 10 years. He was succeeded in 2015 by Dr. Nancy Collop, who will complete her tenure in December 2024.

The Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine is published monthly and is available online at jcsm.aasm.org.
