ACM and CAUL forge OA agreement to support researchers in Australia and New Zealand -

The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and the Council of Australian University Librarians (CAUL) have inked a transformative agreement in a momentous stride toward enabling open-access publishing for researchers in Australia and New Zealand. Scheduled to commence in 2024, the partnership heralds an era where researchers affiliated with CAUL institutions can publish their work without incurring individual article processing charges (APCs).

The newly established agreement, orchestrated by university libraries, stands as a pioneering initiative that extends its benefits to institutions, irrespective of their publication volume.

Highlighting the significance of this collaboration, Hero Macdonald, University Librarian at Deakin University and chair of the CAUL Content Procurement Committee, emphasized the pioneering commitment of ACM to transition from traditional subscription-based models to a pricing structure directly linked to publishing volume. Additionally, this move underscores ACM's dedication to fostering equitable and transparent practices in its evolution towards becoming a fully open access publisher.

The partnership between ACM and CAUL not only marks a pivotal moment in facilitating open access for researchers but also exemplifies a shared commitment to bolstering transparent, accessible, and equitable publishing practices in academia. This agreement signals a promising future for researchers in the region, fostering a landscape where the dissemination of high-quality academic work is uninhibited by financial barriers.
