ACS launches $2.5 million initiative to assist graduate students facing research disruptions -

The American Chemical Society (ACS) has announced the creation of the Graduate Student Success Grant, a one-time $2.5 million funding initiative aimed at supporting graduate students whose research has been disrupted due to the termination or cancellation of research grants.

Through this program, ACS will provide up to 100 individual grants of $25,000 each. These grants are intended to help master’s and Ph.D. students who are within one year of completing their degrees. Funds will be directed to principal investigators to cover student stipends and benefits, thereby maintaining the students’ active academic status and enabling degree completion.

ACS Chair of the Board of Directors Wayne E. Jones emphasized the program’s role in preserving the development of the scientific workforce, noting that the loss of funding can interrupt the educational trajectory of emerging chemists and researchers.

Applications for the grant will open on September 15, 2025, at 2 p.m. ET and close on October 1, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. ET. Each research institution may submit only one application, requiring coordination among principal investigators, department chairs, and research leadership. Notifications will be sent by October 15, 2025, with disbursements planned for later in the year.

The initiative is managed by the ACS Board of Directors and marks a first-of-its-kind rapid response funding model for the organization. It reflects ACS’s broader mission to support the advancement of chemistry and uphold the integrity of scientific progress by mitigating disruptions to education and research pipelines.
