The American Chemical Society (ACS) Publications division has announced a webinar series titled Open Science Essentials, running from September to November 2025. Each session will examine a distinct aspect of open science, featuring expert panels that address central issues and respond to audience questions.
Open science encompasses practices aimed at improving transparency, accessibility, and reproducibility across the research process, from study design through to dissemination. ACS Publications has supported a range of open science initiatives, including ChemRxiv, a preprint server for chemistry with more than 33,000 preprints, open data, and multiple open access publishing options.
The series will open with a webinar on preprints scheduled for September 18, 2025. The discussion will focus on the role of preprints in the scientific record, examining how these non–peer reviewed manuscripts have been used for over three decades and are increasingly adopted by authors.
The second session, on October 7, 2025, will address open sharing of research data. Speakers will consider policies, infrastructure of data sharing, and current landscape of data repositories, with attention to steps being taken to expand immediate access and improve reproducibility.
On October 21, 2025, a webinar will revisit research integrity within the context of open science. The panel will discuss retractions, institutional and publisher roles in researcher education, and the effects of publication pressures on research standards.
The final session, on November 11, 2025, will consider the trajectory of open access. Discussions will include the impact of institutional open access agreements, their future outlook, and long-term implications for large-scale open access initiatives.
