Acta Acustica transitions to Diamond Open Access, promoting equitable global research in acoustics -

The European Acoustics Association (EAA) and EDP Sciences are proud to announce that Acta Acustica, a leading journal in the field of acoustics, has transitioned to Diamond Open Access (OA) as of January 1, 2025. This milestone continues the journal’s commitment to accessibility, following its move from a subscription-based model to Gold OA in 2020. Under the Diamond OA model, Acta Acustica now provides entirely free access to both readers and authors, removing all Article Processing Charges (APCs).

The shift to Diamond OA eliminates financial barriers for researchers, particularly those from underfunded institutions or regions, fostering a more inclusive academic landscape. By removing the need for authors to secure funding for APCs, the journal opens the door for broader participation in acoustics research.

This initiative is underpinned by a cooperative funding model, demonstrating the strength of European collaboration. The French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), Technische Informationsbibliothek (TIB), the French Acoustics Society (SFA), and the EAA have collectively secured funding to support the journal’s Diamond OA model from 2025 to 2027.

While financial support for the first year is assured, sustaining this model beyond 2025 requires additional contributions. To ensure equitable global participation, funding will need to be fairly distributed among institutions and countries accessing or publishing in the journal.

The transition aligns with the broader objectives of the Action Plan for Diamond Open Access, a collaborative framework endorsed by key organizations including the European University Association (EUA), cOAlition S, Science Europe, CNRS, and TIB. The plan emphasizes equitable access and sustainability in scholarly publishing, making Acta Acustica a significant contributor to this mission.

During the initial three-year pilot (2025–2027), Acta Acustica will evaluate the impact of the Diamond OA model on submissions, readership, and global reach. Articles accepted from January 1, 2025, onwards will be published without APCs, regardless of origin, exemplifying the journal’s commitment to inclusivity.

While 2025 funding is secured, additional contributions are critical to sustain the Diamond OA model through 2026 and 2027. Institutions, organizations, and individuals are invited to support this transformative initiative, ensuring the continued availability of high-quality, free-to-access research in acoustics.
