Science Europe has joined the AEGIS‑OA (Activate European Guidance and Incentives for Sustainable Open Access publishing), a Horizon Europe project aimed at strengthening a transparent, sustainable, and high‑quality Open Access scholarly publishing ecosystem across Europe.
The project, running from 2026 to 2028, brings together 24 organizations and builds on the services of the European Diamond Capacity Hub (EDCH). It will develop practical tools, training programs, standards, and support structures for Diamond Open Access publishing, while enhancing cooperation between national and European initiatives.
AEGIS‑OA expands existing work by addressing practical needs of the Diamond Open Access community. Key activities include adapting the Diamond Open Access Standard to books, creating training and certification frameworks for publishing professionals, improving infrastructure such as an EDCH‑compatible version of the Open Journal Systems (OJS) platform, and strengthening coordination through National Capacity Centres. The project will also produce guidelines, toolkits, policy briefs, and recommendations for publishers, research organizations, and funders.
Community engagement is a central component, with opportunities for exchange through the EDCH network and project events. These efforts aim to make Diamond Open Access more sustainable by providing standards, skills, infrastructure, and coordination to support implementation across Europe.
Science Europe’s role focuses on supporting project implementation and connecting its work with the broader research community. It will help disseminate activities, resources, and results through its network, particularly to research funding and performing organizations. This involvement complements Science Europe’s wider work on Open Science and scholarly communication, while creating opportunities to share knowledge and practical resources with member organizations and the broader community.
