AIP Publishing has introduced new editorial leadership for two journals central to the physical sciences research community. Savvas G. Hatzikiriakos of the University of British Columbia and Gerald G. Fuller of Stanford University have been appointed co–Editors-in-Chief of Physics of Fluids, while Andrew Forbes has been named Editor-in-Chief of APL Photonics, effective January 1, 2026.
The dual-leadership model at Physics of Fluids reflects the journal’s scale and disciplinary breadth. Hatzikiriakos is a leading researcher in fluid mechanics and rheology with published work spanning non-Newtonian flow, polymer processing, interfacial phenomena, and confined fluid dynamics. He has authored more than 300 peer-reviewed papers and is a member of the Canadian Academy of Engineering. Fuller, the Fletcher Jones II Professor of Chemical Engineering at Stanford University, is internationally recognized for contributions to soft matter and interfacial fluid mechanics and has published more than 340 peer-reviewed papers. He is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and a recipient of major awards in the field.
The two editors bring extensive scientific expertise and editorial experience to guide the journal’s next phase, with a shared emphasis on reinforcing fundamental fluid physics, supporting emerging research areas, and engaging authors and reviewers across the global community. Physics of Fluids continues to publish theoretical, computational, and experimental research on the dynamics of gases, liquids, and complex or multiphase fluids.
AIP Publishing has also appointed Andrew Forbes as the next Editor-in-Chief of APL Photonics. Forbes, a Distinguished Professor at the University of the Witwatersrand, becomes the first Editor-in-Chief of an AIP Publishing journal based on the African continent. He is widely recognized for leadership in structured light and quantum photonics, founded the Structured Light Laboratory at the University of the Witwatersrand, and has contributed to the development of photonics research and infrastructure across Africa.
Forbes is a Fellow of SPIE, Optica, PIERS, and the South African Institute of Physics and an elected member of the Academy of Science of South Africa. He appears on the 2024 and 2025 Clarivate Highly Cited Researchers lists and has received major honors, including the SAIP Gold Medal, the Alexander von Humboldt Georg Forster Prize, the Sang Soo Lee Award, the TWAS Physics Prize, the national NSTF Award for Quantum, and the Harry Oppenheimer Trust Fellowship. APL Photonics publishes research in nanophotonics, quantum photonics, integrated photonics, ultrafast optics, and emerging photonic materials and devices.
