AIP Publishing appoints Dr. Ranjan Singh as Founding Editor-in-Chief of APL Engineering Physics -

AIP Publishing has appointed Prof. Ranjan Singh, a leading researcher in photonics and metamaterials, as the founding editor-in-chief of APL Engineering Physics, a leading open access journal in the Applied Physics Letters family. The journal will focus on interdisciplinary research that applies principles of physics to solve engineering challenges across emerging technologies.

Currently, a professor at the University of Notre Dame, Prof. Singh is internationally recognized for his work in optics, spintronics, terahertz superconductors, and quantum materials. His appointment signals the journal’s intention to become a platform for physics-first research that drives innovation in areas such as 6G, photonic integrated circuits, and hybrid electronic-photonic systems.

APL Engineering Physics will serve as the venue for impactful applied research that bridges disciplines. It joins a growing portfolio of APL-branded journals, including APL Materials, APL Photonics, and APL Quantum, and will follow the same editorial standards emphasizing scientific rigor, rapid publication, and global reach.

Prof. Singh previously held leadership roles at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, where he founded TeraX Labs, a research hub for terahertz innovation.

He earned his Ph.D. in Photonics from Oklahoma State University, completed postdoctoral work at Los Alamos National Laboratory, and is a Web of Science Highly Cited Researcher and an elected Fellow of OPTICA.

'A journal like this is essential for showcasing research that not only explains the world but actively builds its technological future,” Singh said. “We want to offer a global stage for interdisciplinary work that redefines the boundaries between physics and engineering.'

According to AIP Publishing, the journal’s launch supports its broader mission of breaking down barriers in scientific communication and accelerating progress through open, equitable access. Submissions to APL Engineering Physics will open soon.
