AIP Publishing has announced the launch of a pilot for AIP Fusion, a services-based model intended to change how institutions access and contribute to scientific research.
The pilot is scheduled to begin in 2026 with a select group of institutions and library consortia. AIP Fusion transitions from the traditional “article economy” to a services-based model that offers unlimited reading and publishing services across AIP Publishing’s portfolio of over 40 journals, all under a single, transparent agreement. For institutions participating in AIP Fusion, article processing charges (APCs) are eliminated, enabling researchers to publish openly and ethically without administrative friction.
The model has been developed in close consultation with libraries and consortia in regions including the US, Canada, the UK, and the EU to ensure alignment with regional open science forward policies and institutional requirements.
In describing the model, it is noted that the pricing formula is clear and mission-driven, promoting transparency and trust. Institutions under AIP Fusion gain access to the full journal portfolio, including archival content dating back to 1999, and all articles published under the agreement are made openly available under a CC BY 4.0 license to support funder compliance.
Fees under the model are calculated using transparent formulas that consider an institution’s legacy publishing activity and usage, with safeguards intended to maintain price stability. The model is positioned to replace article-based fees with a services-based model, supporting a research ecosystem where scientific integrity, rather than volume, is emphasized.
