Allen Press to hold annual event on emerging trends in scholarly publishing in April -

Publishing services provider Allen Press, Inc., US, has announced that it will present its annual Emerging Trends in Scholarly Publishing Seminar on April 3, 2013 at the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill. The 2013 seminar is titled "Redraw the Map: Setting the New Coordinates for Scholarly Publishing". Leaders in the field of scholarly and electronic publishing will share their expertise, experience and analysis on a variety of topics ranging from journal start-ups, technological developments, content discovery, and journal and article metrics.

Speakers this year include Jennifer McClellan from eLife, Jackie Thai from PeerJ, and Daniel Kulp from the Physical Review X, who will offer an inside look at journal start-ups. The speakers in this session, 'Uncharted Territory: Journal Start-Ups' will provide information on their business cases, intended markets, economic realities, publishing philosophies and the results of their innovations.

John Blossom, President of Shore Communications, Inc. and a technology and content industry analyst, will highlight what publishers and editors should pay attention to this coming year in a session titled 'Recalibrating Your GPS: Top Publishing Technology Developments to Watch.'

In another session, 'Exploration and Discovery: How Do Readers Find You Now?' Tracy Gardner, co-author of a recently released study, 'How Readers Discover Content in Scholarly Journals,' will discuss changes in user behaviour over a seven-year period, between 2005 and 2012, and the implications for website design and function.

'Alternate Routes: Journal Metrics Revisited' will wrap up the day with a panel presentation on alternatives to the prevailing impact measurement model and a discussion on article-level metrics and how they are used as filtering and evaluation tools in the journal environment. Speakers will be Jason Priem of ImpactStory and a Royster Fellow at the University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill, and Jayne Marks, Vice President of Publishing at Wolters Kluwer Health.

Roundtable discussions, which have become a popular staple of the seminar over the past several years, will continue this year with a variety of subjects of importance to scholarly publishers. There will also be an extended networking lunch.
