ALPSP Annual Conference & Awards 2024: Pioneering discussions on open access, AI, and the future of scholarly publishing -

The Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers (ALPSP) will host its Annual Conference and Awards from September 11-13, 2024, at the Hilton Manchester Deansgate. This year's event will be the second hybrid conference, bringing together the global scholarly community both in person and virtually to discuss pressing issues in publishing.

The ALPSP Conference is a renowned forum where professionals from the scholarly publishing sector can share insights, learn about new initiatives, and engage in open discussions on the challenges and opportunities facing the industry. The event promises a wide-ranging program featuring expert speakers and panels that will delve into the evolving landscape of scholarly publishing.

One of the highlights of the conference will be Jake Okechukwu Effoduh's keynote address on September 11. Effoduh is an Assistant Professor at the Lincoln Alexander School of Law at Toronto Metropolitan University. He is also the Production Editor of the Transnational Human Rights Review and a designated Queen Elizabeth Scholar.

Effoduh's talk, titled "Scholarly Publishing in the Era of Open Access and Generative AI," will explore the tensions arising from open access initiatives and their impact on democratizing access to scholarly content. Drawing from his experiences as an academic and researcher from the Global South, Effoduh will highlight how barriers to publication are intensifying in various regions. He will offer strategies to mitigate these challenges and promote accessibility while ensuring sustainable funding models for academic publishing.

In addition to discussing open access, Effoduh will examine the transformative role of generative AI and other emerging technologies in scholarly publishing workflows. While these technologies hold the potential to enhance content creation and quality assurance, they also pose significant risks, including workforce reductions and redundancies. Effoduh will emphasize the need for trust-building and collaboration among publishers, researchers, libraries, technologists, and policymakers to address issues such as research integrity, funding shortages, intellectual property conflicts, and growing inequities in publishing.

The ALPSP Annual Conference & Awards 2024 aims to provide a platform for re-examining the dynamic landscape of scholarly publishing. Effoduh's keynote will serve as an invitation to the ALPSP membership to shape the future of publishing and innovation, envisioning a more equitable and sustainable knowledge ecosystem in this digital age.

As the scholarly community faces the complexities of the modern publishing era, the ALPSP Conference will offer a space for dialogue, learning, and collaboration, paving the way for new approaches and solutions in the industry.
