The American Medical Association (AMA) has released the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) 2027 code set, which includes 299 new codes designed to reflect developments in medical, surgical, and diagnostic services.
The CPT code set continues to evolve alongside medical innovation, offering a structured pathway for integrating new services and procedures into the healthcare system. Many of the latest updates align with contemporary clinical practice, science, and technology, ensuring that CPT remains a uniform language of medicine.
Beyond billing, the CPT code set functions as a backbone of health data interoperability (PDF) in the United States. It enables accurate identification and communication of patient services across the healthcare system and supports value‑based care, preventive services, quality measurement, research, and analytics.
The CPT code set is maintained through an independent, evidence‑informed process with input from healthcare professionals, government agencies, health plans, and industry. For the 2027 edition, this process resulted in 453 editorial changes, including 299 new codes, 74 revisions, and 80 deletions.
Key updates effective January 1 include:
• Maternity care services: A revised framework replaces the long‑standing global maternity care bundle, reflecting team‑based obstetric practice across antepartum, labor, delivery, and postpartum care.
• Ventricular assist device procedures: New guidelines and three new codes improve reporting for left ventricular assist device procedures.
• Hernia repair: Nine new codes expand reporting options for diaphragmatic hernia repair procedures across open, laparoscopic, and thoracoscopic approaches.
• Prostate biopsy: Updated codes and guidelines reflect current biopsy techniques and improve data specificity.
• Biofeedback: A new time‑based code structure aligns reporting with how biofeedback training is commonly delivered.
• Radiology: New and revised codes, including a table for head and neck magnetic resonance angiography, reflect advances in imaging technologies.
• Sleep medicine: Six new codes for unattended sleep studies capture services delivered outside traditional sleep centers.
The CPT 2027 code set also expands its coverage of AI‑related services, adding 10 new codes and bringing the total to 43. The CPT Editorial Panel updated the Taxonomy for artificial intelligence in medical services and procedures to ensure terminology remains relevant as clinical AI evolves.
From November 18 to 20, CPT experts will provide coding guidance and clinical context for the upcoming changes at the CPT & RBRVS 2027 Annual Symposium. Coding resources, including print and digital versions of the CPT codebook, data file products, and CPT educational content, are available through the AMA.
