The American Academy of Neurology (AAN) has announced that A. Gordon Smith, MD, FAAN, will become the next editor-in-chief of Continuum: Lifelong Learning in Neurology®, the organization’s official continuing medical education journal. Smith will assume the role on May 1, 2027, following the departure of Lyell K. Jones, Jr, MD, FAAN, who will step down to serve as the next president of the AAN. Smith will be the fifth editor-in-chief since the journal’s launch in 1993.
Smith noted that neurology is experiencing rapid advances, with new discoveries and therapies emerging at an accelerating pace. He stated that his goal as incoming editor-in-chief is to ensure that Continuum maintains its tradition of educational innovation and continues to serve as a vital resource for the neurology care community.
Continuum is a bimonthly, topic-based, clinically oriented review journal aimed at practicing neurologists, residents, fellows, advanced practice providers, and other neurology professionals. Each issue focuses on a single area of neurology and is authored by experts in the field. The journal also offers companion resources, including Continuum Audio, a podcast featuring discussions with guest editors and authors, and Continuum Aloud, audiobook-style recordings of articles.
Smith currently serves as the Kenneth and Dianne Wright Distinguished Chair and Professor of Neurology at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in Richmond, Virginia, and previously chaired the Department of Neurology at VCU. He has been a member of the Continuum Editorial Board since 2015 and began contributing as a Continuum Audio interviewer in 2023. He has also served on the AAN Institute Board of Directors as chair of the AAN Education Committee.
After earning his medical degree from Mayo Medical School and completing his neurology residency and neuromuscular medicine fellowship at the University of Michigan, Smith established himself as an internationally recognized expert in neuromuscular medicine. His research has focused on peripheral nervous system disorders, including peripheral neuropathy related to diabetes, obesity, and chemotherapy exposure. He has led and participated in numerous clinical trials and research studies in these areas.
