The Publications Division of the American Chemical Society (ACS) has announced the appointment of Dr. Shana J. Sturla of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich (ETH Zürich) as the next editor-in-chief of Chemical Research in Toxicology, the only chemistry-focused journal dedicated to advancing the understanding of toxic agents. Sturla will take over leadership of the distinguished peer-reviewed journal, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, at the beginning of 2018.
Sturla joined the faculty of ETH Zürich in the Department of Health Sciences and Technology in 2009 and was promoted to full professor of toxicology in 2016. Upon her arrival in Switzerland, Sturla was the only woman in Zürich to be awarded a prestigious European Research Council Starting Grant that year. In 2014, Sturla received Chemical Research in Toxicology’s Young Investigator in Toxicology Award, and in 2015 she became the vice president of the Swiss Society of Toxicology. Her research focuses on the chemical basis of mutagenesis and toxicity, of which she seeks to delineate the relationships between chemical structures, enzyme-catalyzed chemical transformations, and cellular responses to environmental and dietary toxicants and cancer drugs.
Chemical Research in Toxicology published its first issue in 1988 with a mission of advancing the understanding of the impact of chemical and biological agents on human health. The journal publishes articles, reviews, perspectives and letters covering all aspects of the chemical basis of toxic responses.
Sturla will succeed Dr. Stephen S. Hecht, who has served as the journal's editor since 2013. Hecht is the Wallin Land Grant Professor of Cancer Prevention at the University of Minnesota Cancer Center, where Sturla served under his guidance as a postdoctoral fellow.
