The American Library Association (ALA) has introduced a new strategic plan designed to drive innovation, expand community engagement, and support workforce development across the library profession.
The new plan was developed over several months through a data-driven process with a strategic planning consultant. It was significantly shaped by insights from our Strategic Planning Task Force, a diverse group of member volunteers representing various sectors, roles, and perspectives across the association. This broad engagement ensures the plan genuinely reflects the real-world needs, opportunities, and aspirations of the library community.
Key focus areas include enhancing the library workforce pipeline through career awareness, recruitment campaigns and education, boosting the adoption of emerging technologies, strengthening advocacy efforts at all levels, and expanding library-led community programs.
ALA’s initiative emphasizes collaboration and seeks active involvement from its members and partners. The organization encourages professionals to contribute by volunteering, renewing memberships, or donating to sustain the strategic initiatives outlined in the plan.
This multi-year roadmap underscores the association’s goal of equipping library professionals with the tools and support needed to navigate a rapidly shifting landscape while amplifying libraries’ societal impact.
