The American Mathematical Society (AMS) has appointed Dr. David Manderscheid, as Editor‑in‑Chief of Notices of the AMS, the Society’s flagship publication and journal of record for the mathematical sciences community.
Manderscheid, a professor of mathematics at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, brings extensive experience as a mathematician, educator, and administrator. He previously served as director of the Division of Mathematical Sciences at the National Science Foundation and held senior leadership roles at the University of Tennessee, Ohio State University, the University of Nebraska, and the University of Iowa. His research interests include representation theory and its applications to number theory, and his work has been supported by the National Science Foundation, the National Security Agency, and the U.S. Department of Education.
As Editor‑in‑Chief, Manderscheid will oversee the editorial vision of Notices, ensuring the publication continues to reflect the breadth and impact of the mathematical sciences while supporting the AMS mission to advance mathematics. The journal, published 11 times annually and distributed worldwide, features articles on emerging research, education, public policy, history, career development, book reviews, and community news.
AMS Chief Publishing Officer Robert Harington stated that Manderscheid’s broad perspective as a mathematician, educator, and leader makes him well‑suited to guide the publication. AMS President Ravi Vakil expressed gratitude to Joseph H. Silverman, Ph.D., who served as interim Editor‑in‑Chief since July 2025, noting his thoughtful leadership and commitment to maintaining the journal’s standards during the transition.
Manderscheid said he was honored to take on the role, emphasizing that Notices has long served as a forum for sharing ideas and fostering connections across the mathematical community. He noted his intention to build on the publication’s strong tradition while exploring new opportunities to engage readers and reflect the evolving landscape of the mathematical sciences.
