American Psychological Association to publish The Humanistic Psychologist -

The American Psychological Association has announced that it is the new publisher of The Humanistic Psychologist, a journal devoted to reflective inquiry into ‘humanistic psychologies.’

To be published quarterly, The Humanistic Psychologist publishes papers from contributors worldwide on qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods research; humanistic, existential, constructivist and transpersonal theories and psychotherapies; and articles grounded in phenomenological, hermeneutic, critical, feminist and multicultural perspectives. Reflecting the journal’s commitment to epistemological diversity, contributions represent indigenous psychologies and dialogue between humanistic and positive psychologies, as well as general articles in humanistic psychology, philosophical foundations, professional perspectives, international contributions, student spotlights, commentary, book reviews, memorials and brief reflections.

As stated in the inaugural editorial in the first issue published by the APA, humanistic psychologists have always been at the forefront in discussions of moral values, beginning with the field’s founding fathers (such as Gordon Allport, Abraham Maslow, Rollo May and Carl Rogers) who stressed the importance of authenticity, integrity and relationality. As a result, The Humanistic Psychologist is a showcase for presenting contributions to discussions of professional values and ethics.

The journal’s wide range of offerings serves to introduce new readers to the field of humanistic psychology, while expanding an appreciation among all readers of the variegated and often provocative insights of current leaders in the field. Research — both qualitative and quantitative — is encouraged and is well-represented in the journal.

Dr. Scott D. Churchill, professor of psychology and graduate program director at University of Dallas, serves as the editor of the journal. Churchill is a member of the graduate faculty within the Institute of Philosophical Studies at the University of Dallas.

The Humanistic Psychologist is the official journal of the Society for Humanistic Psychology (APA Div. 32). The society represents a constellation of “humanistic psychologies” that includes the earlier Rogerian, transpersonal and existential orientations as well as the more recently developing perspectives of phenomenological, hermeneutic, constructivist, feminist and postmodern (social constructionist) psychologies. It seeks to contribute to psychotherapy, education, theory, research, epistemological diversity, cultural diversity, organisation, management, social responsibility and change. In particular, the society has been at the forefront in the development of qualitative research methodologies.

Articles published in The Humanistic Psychologist will also be available through APA’s PsycARTICLES®, the most used full-text database in psychology and one of the most popular databases in all scholarly disciplines and fields. PsycARTICLES is available to a global audience of nearly 3,700 institutions and 80 million potential users.
