American Society for Microbiology announces new leadership for 2025–2026 term -

The American Society for Microbiology (ASM) has announced new appointments to its leadership team, effective July 1, 2025. Dr. Alexander McAdam has taken over as ASM President for the 2025–2026 term, while Dr. Vaughn Cooper will serve as President-Elect of the Board of Directors. Additional changes include the election of Dr. Michael D. L. Johnson as an At-Large Director and Dr. Michelle Dziejman, to complete Cooper’s vacated term as At-Large Director, ending June 30, 2026.

McAdam is Director of the Infectious Diseases Diagnostic Laboratory and an associate professor of pathology at Harvard Medical School. Cooper holds professorships in microbiology, molecular genetics, and computational and systems biology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and Co-Founder and Director of the Center for Evolutionary Biology and Medicine.

The newly appointed leaders are expected to play a central role in advancing ASM’s strategic roadmap and supporting its scientific units. The Board of Directors provides guidance on initiatives that span the society’s research, clinical, and educational programs.

ASM expressed confidence in the new board’s ability to strengthen the microbial sciences community and lead ongoing efforts to expand laboratory capacity, promote scientific collaboration, and broaden public understanding of microbiology.

Founded in 1899, ASM represents over 37,000 scientists and health professionals globally. The organization supports its members through scientific conferences, peer-reviewed journals, professional certification, training resources, and advocacy. It also works to bridge academic, industrial, and clinical practice in microbial sciences.
