The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) has announced the appointment of James P. Rathmell, M.D., MBA, as the editor in chief of Anesthesiology, the esteemed peer-reviewed medical journal under ASA's purview. Dr. Rathmell brings an illustrious background to this pivotal role, having previously served as the executive editor for Anesthesiology from 2012 to 2021, followed by contributions as the creative and multimedia editor since 2021. His tenure as interim coeditor-in-chief alongside Dr. Deborah Culley, extends over the past seven months, showcasing his ongoing dedication to the journal's advancements. Dr. Rathmell is slated to commence his new role on January 1, 2024.
Dr. Rathmell currently serves as the Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine, and a professor of anesthesia at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH), Brigham and Women’s Physician Organization (BWPO), Harvard Medical School (HMS) in Boston, Massachusetts, since June 2015. He also holds the position of Chief of Enterprise Anesthesiology at Mass General Brigham in Boston since June 2022.
