American Urological Association appoints David Penson as next Editor of The Journal of Urology® -

The American Urological Association (AUA) has announced that Dr. David F. Penson, will become the next editor of The Journal of Urology®, the organization’s flagship scientific publication. Dr. Penson will begin serving as editor‑in‑training on January 1, 2027, before assuming a three‑year term as editor starting January 1, 2028.

Founded in 1917, The Journal of Urology® has long been a leading forum for urologic research. At a time of significant change in scholarly publishing, Dr. Penson will oversee the journal’s editorial strategy, peer review processes, and editorial board, working with AUA Publications staff to maintain its influence and relevance across the global urologic community.

Dr. Penson brings extensive editorial and publishing experience, having served on the editorial boards of The Journal of Urology®, BJU International, the Journal of Clinical Oncology, and the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. He has also held numerous reviewer and leadership roles throughout his career.

Dr. Thomas F. Stringer, chair of the Editor Search Committee, explained that the committee sought a candidate with strong editorial credentials and leadership skills to guide the journal through a rapidly evolving publishing environment. He noted that Dr. Penson distinguished himself as both an accomplished researcher and an innovative leader, with a vision that balances continuity with adaptation to future challenges.

Dr. Penson is professor and chair of the Department of Urology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, professor of Health Policy at Vanderbilt University, and director of the Center for Surgical Quality and Outcomes Research. He has authored more than 300 scholarly works and contributed to research, policy, and patient care in urology. His achievements have been recognized with honors including the AUA Gold Cystoscope Award and the AUA Distinguished Service Award.
