AMIA appoints Thomas Kannampallil as next Editor-in-Chief of JAMIA -

The American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) has announced that Thomas Kannampallil, PhD, FACMI, FAMIA, will serve as the next Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association (JAMIA), beginning January 1, 2027. The appointment was made by the AMIA Board of Directors.

Dr. Kannampallil will succeed Suzanne R. Bakken, PhD, RN, FAAN, FACMI, who has led the journal since 2019. AMIA leadership noted that he is widely respected in biomedical and health informatics, with extensive experience in research, editorial work, and community engagement. They expressed confidence that his leadership would sustain JAMIA’s reputation while guiding its continued development.

Dr. Kannampallil is a professor of anesthesiology and a faculty member at the Institute for Informatics, Data Science, and Biostatistics (I2DB) at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. He also serves as assistant dean for Data Science, chief data scientist for WashU Medicine, and faculty lead for the Center for Health AI. His work bridges academic research and health system operations, focusing on the design, adoption, and organizational impact of artificial intelligence tools.

His research interests include clinical informatics, patient safety, and artificial intelligence, often using pragmatic clinical trials and innovative study designs. He has authored more than 150 peer-reviewed publications and has held editorial roles at the Journal of Biomedical Informatics. He is a fellow of both AMIA and the American College of Medical Informatics (ACMI).

In his new role, Dr. Kannampallil has indicated that he aims to build on JAMIA’s foundation by maintaining high methodological standards, strengthening the translational impact of informatics research, and supporting transparent, data-informed editorial practices.
