Independent research company Forrester Research, US, has published a new report that says more than 112 million Americans - one-third of the US adult population - will own a tablet by 2016. With Apple reportedly set to announce its next-generation iPad, the Forrester report shows no significant Android challenger to Apple's dominance of the tablet market.
The company's latest consumer survey shows Apple with a 73 percent market share; no other brand has more than a 6 percent market share. When consumers were asked as to which brand of tablet they were considering buying, 61 percent said Apple, while 24 percent named Amazon.
In 2012, disruptive product strategies stand the best chance of winning, according to Forrester analysts. Apple should launch a smaller, cheaper iPad to ward off competition from Amazon, they feel. Also, Amazon could combat Apple by licensing its platform to other hardware OEMs. The analysts further say OEMs like Lenovo, Toshiba, Samsung and HTC ought to abandon pure Android in favour of Windows, at least in the US.
