APS expands open access with Subscribe to Open for 2025 -

The American Physiological Society (APS) has successfully implemented its Subscribe to Open (S2O) model, making 10 of its primary research journals fully open access in 2025. With continued support from institutional and library partners, APS has broadened free, unrestricted access to high-quality physiological research while reinforcing its commitment to sustainable nonprofit publishing.

Through the S2O initiative, APS has eliminated article processing charges (APCs) for authors and expanded global access to groundbreaking research in physiology and related disciplines. This milestone reflects the Society’s commitment to removing barriers for authors and readers, increasing research visibility, and fostering greater engagement with the physiological sciences.

Institutions subscribing to the APS Digital Library or American Journal of Physiology (AJP Consolidated) packages benefit from a guaranteed open-access model. Subscribers receive full access to APS’s 10 research journals, ensuring that affiliated researchers can seamlessly publish open access without APCs. This approach simplifies participation, eliminates administrative complexities, and provides a predictable publishing experience for institutions.

To support participation, APS has introduced an open access eligibility tool, enabling institutions to verify their subscription status and associated publishing benefits quickly. As a mission-driven, nonprofit publisher, APS continues to reinvest in the research community by supporting authors, funding travel awards, hosting scientific meetings, and advancing physiological sciences.

By subscribing through S2O, institutions play a critical role in sustaining high-quality, society-led publishing while contributing to a sustainable open access future. APS remains committed to expanding open access initiatives and strengthening its publishing model to ensure long-term accessibility and engagement within the global research community.
