APS Open Science publishes first papers -

The American Physical Society (APS) has announced the publication of the first papers in its new open access journal, APS Open Science. Ten studies by authors from multiple countries mark the journal’s launch, covering topics such as the geometry of 3D soliton knots, hybrid materials for ultrafast photonic and optical devices, and advances in quantum entanglement verification.

The journal is intended to broaden participation in physics publishing while maintaining the peer review standards associated with APS journals. It accepts a wide range of article types, including traditional research papers, data and software advances, methods papers, and negative or null results. The inaugural collection reflects this scope, with articles addressing photonic crystal topological states, models of “smart metals,” and other areas of physics research.

Authors of the first papers represent institutions across four continents, underscoring the journal’s commitment to global inclusion.

To support open access, APS Open Science is waiving article publication charges for all submissions and transfers received before September 1, 2026. As with other APS journals, publication charges will continue to be waived for researchers in low‑ and middle‑income countries. The editors plan to introduce new initiatives to serve the community and will invite researchers to participate in shaping the journal’s development.
