APS opens 10 journals in 2026 under Subscribe to Open model -

The American Physiological Society has met the 2026 target for its Subscribe to Open program, allowing 10 primary research journals to be made open access worldwide without article processing charges for authors. APS stated the result was made possible by continued support from institutional library partners that maintained subscriptions under the society’s S2O model.

According to the society, the model differs from open access approaches that depend on APCs because continued institutional subscription support determines whether journals can be opened to all readers. Under the arrangement, institutions subscribing to the APS Digital Library receive full access to the 10 primary research journals for affiliated researchers, while corresponding authors at subscribing institutions are able to publish open access without APCs through the APS open access guarantee.

APS noted the 2026 outcome reflects ongoing backing from library partners for a publishing approach intended to preserve access while avoiding direct publishing charges for authors. According to the, publishing revenue is reinvested in scientific meetings, awards and fellowships, career development, and advocacy efforts supporting the physiological sciences.

The announcement frames institutional participation as central to sustaining both the publishing model and the broader disciplinary mission. APS, which supports a global community of more than 10,000 biomedical scientists and educators, stated physiology research underpins medical advancement and remains central to the society’s publishing and program activities. The 2026 milestone gives the organization another year in which a substantial part of its journal portfolio will be openly available through a subscription-supported model rather than an APC-funded route.
