The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) and DataCite have announced a collaboration to deliver the RAiD service, an innovative solution for identifying and tracking research projects and activities. This strategic partnership marks a significant milestone in advancing research infrastructure and fostering global collaboration in the scholarly community.
RAiD, which stands for Research Activity Identifier, is designed to address a crucial challenge faced by researchers, funders, publishers, and other stakeholders—maintaining consistent and up-to-date information on research projects throughout their lifecycle. Unlike traditional identifiers, RAiD provides a unique, persistent identifier (a DataCite DOI) for each research project, capturing dynamic information about project personnel, organizations, inputs, and outputs.
The partnership between ARDC and DataCite leverages DataCite's robust infrastructure to ensure the scalability, reliability, and sustainability of the RAiD service.
The partnership between DataCite and RAiD offers several benefits, including standardized landing pages, support for unique identifier structures, and the option for RAiD to participate in DOI-related policies via ARDC as a DOI Foundation General Member.
RAiDs are issued by RAiD Registration Agencies (RAs) appointed by ARDC, with each RA operating an instance of the RAiD service for a specific region or constituency. RAiD RAs utilize DataCite services to register DOIs as RAiD identifiers and submit metadata to DataCite, ensuring seamless integration into the global RAiD system.
Looking ahead, the DataCite-RAiD partnership will be guided by a joint steering group focused on enabling findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable research globally. This collaboration underscores a shared commitment to advancing open identification and description of research activities, empowering the international research community to more effectively track and build upon their work over time.
