ARL releases new resources from Machine Actionable Plans Pilot -

The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) has released a set of resources from the Machine Actionable Plans (MAP) Pilot, a project developed with the California Digital Library and funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS LG-254861-OLS-23). The initiative explored the integration of machine-actionable data management plans (maDMPs) into institutional research and IT systems.

Pilot institutions—including Arizona State University, Northwestern University, Pennsylvania State University, the University of California, Riverside, and the University of Colorado Boulder—implemented projects tailored to local challenges and opportunities. These ranged from API-based automation and technical tool development to cross-departmental collaboration in support of research data management.

The MAP Pilot produced a 28-page report summarizing pilot activities, project’s background, DMP Tool development, pilot observations, and summary key recommendations. Case studies contributed by participating institutions highlight outcomes and provide guidance on scaling maDMP adoption.

To support broader institutional engagement, ARL has also published short recommendation guides for researchers, librarians, IT and information security departments, and grant offices.

Additional detailed reports from partners will be made available in the coming months.

The MAP Pilot team emphasizes that the resources are intended to help institutions explore the potential benefits of maDMPs, strengthen collaboration, and expand capacity for meeting evolving data-sharing requirements.
