ASBMB introduces new open access journal to expand research publishing in biochemistry and molecular biology -

The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) has launched Insights in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IBMB), a new journal designed to broaden the dissemination of research across the molecular life sciences.

IBMB joins the society’s existing publications — the Journal of Biological Chemistry, Molecular & Cellular Proteomics, and the Journal of Lipid Research. The addition is intended to enhance the society’s efforts to support discovery in biochemistry and molecular biology and contribute to long-term scientific progress relevant to health and human benefit.

Consistent with ASBMB’s publishing model, IBMB will operate as a gold open-access journal to help ensure research findings are available to the widest possible audience. This approach supports compliance with funder requirements and aims to increase visibility while maintaining accessible article processing charges. The journal will also use Elsevier’s new submission management platform to streamline the author experience. ASBMB members at both professional and early-career stages will be eligible for discounted publication rates across all ASBMB journals, including IBMB.

Benjamin Garcia, head of biochemistry and molecular biophysics at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, will serve as the inaugural Editor-in-Chief. His research focuses on quantitative mass spectrometry–based proteomics and computational methods for studying dynamic protein and proteome posttranslational modifications. His experience includes service on multiple editorial boards and ongoing involvement in ASBMB initiatives that support access and mentorship within the scientific community. In 2024, he received the ASBMB Ruth Kirchstein Award for Maximizing Access in Science in recognition of his mentorship efforts supporting emerging scientists through initiatives such as the society’s Maximizing Opportunities for Scientific and Academic Independent Careers (MOSAIC) program.

Perspectives within the field emphasize that publishing in society journals supports a broader scientific community dedicated to rigorous research, advocacy for policies that advance discovery, and investment in future generations of scientists.

IBMB will welcome submissions across the molecular life sciences beginning in early 2026 and will also provide a streamlined transfer option for manuscripts submitted to other ASBMB journals. Accepted research areas will include chemical biology, signaling pathways, gene expression, metabolism and metabolomics, structural biology, systems and synthetic biology, and molecular evolution. The journal aims to publish well-executed work that advances fundamental understanding, whether through new discoveries, validated models, or unexpected findings.
