ASM appoints inaugural Editor-in-Chief for ASM Animal Microbiology -

The American Society for Microbiology (ASM) has appointed José A. Vázquez-Boland as the inaugural Editor-in-Chief of its new open-access journal, ASM Animal Microbiology. The publication will focus on microbes associated with animals, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa, and their implications for both veterinary and public health.

Vázquez-Boland is Professor and Chair of Infectious Diseases at the University of Edinburgh and a fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology. He previously served as an editor for mBio. His appointment marks the first time ASM has named a U.K.-based editor in chief in its publishing program’s century-long history.

The journal will publish its first articles in 2026 and aims to provide an international platform for interdisciplinary research. Areas of focus will include microbe–animal host-ecosystem interactions, infectious diseases with economic and public health impacts, and the integration of microbial science with the One Health approach.

ASM described the appointment as a step toward expanding its global reach while offering a specialized outlet for research at the intersection of animal microbiology and public health.
