The American Society for Microbiology (ASM) has appointed Xiaonan Lu, Ph.D., as the inaugural Editor-in-Chief of ASM Food Microbiology, a new open-access journal focused on research at the intersection of microbiology, biotechnology, public health, and agricultural science.
ASM stated that the journal is being launched as global attention intensifies around food safety, biotechnology, and sustainable production. The society added that ASM Food Microbiology is intended to provide a platform for interdisciplinary research and expand opportunities for scientists to publish work supporting resilient global food networks.
Lu is a professor and the Ian & Jayne Munro Endowed Chair in Food Safety at McGill University. ASM noted that in 2025 he was elected as a member of the College of the Royal Society of Canada and as a Tier-1 Canada Research Chair in Food Safety. Lu received his Ph.D. in food science from Washington State University.
ASM stated that the journal will feature research in interdisciplinary areas including fermentation and microbiome engineering, spoilage and preservation, rapid detection technologies, artificial intelligence integration, and One Health and antimicrobial resistance interventions across the food supply chain.
Lu will begin his tenure as editor in chief on July 1, 2026. ASM stated that ASM Food Microbiology will open for submissions in Spring 2026.
