ASM to launch new open access journal focused on animal microbiology -

The American Society for Microbiology (ASM) has announced the forthcoming launch of ASM Animal Microbiology, a peer-reviewed journal dedicated to advancing research on microbes associated with animals and their influence on health, disease, and productivity. Submissions to the new journal will open later in 2025, with initial publications expected in 2026.

The journal will become ASM’s 17th peer-reviewed title and will operate under the Subscribe to Open model. It joins six other ASM journals using this approach, which supports open access publishing by leveraging existing subscriber support. The new journal extends ASM’s coverage of critical microbiology domains, which already span applied and environmental microbiology, clinical microbiology, systems biology, virology, and bacteriology.

With increasing attention to the role of animal microbiomes in global health, food security, and disease transmission, ASM Animal Microbiology will serve as a platform for research spanning veterinary microbiology, zoonotic disease, antimicrobial resistance in animal populations, and microbiome-based therapeutics. The journal will uphold ASM’s rigorous editorial standards while welcoming a broad range of basic and applied research submissions.

The launch comes at a time of growing urgency around issues such as zoonotic pathogens, antimicrobial resistance, and livestock health. By establishing this new outlet, ASM aims to support the scientific community in addressing these challenges and to facilitate the dissemination of research with direct implications for public health and the One Health framework.

A search is now underway for the journal’s inaugural editor in chief, who will assume a five-year renewable term beginning July 1, 2025. This individual will oversee a multidisciplinary editorial board and guide the journal’s strategic development. The new journal will align with established ASM titles including Applied and Environmental Microbiology and the Journal of Clinical Microbiology.

ASM invites applications and nominations from experts in veterinary microbiology or zoonotic disease. Submissions for consideration are due by May 2, 2025.
