Dennis Lloyd, director of the University of Wisconsin Press, has taken office as the 75th President of the Association of University Presses (AUPresses). He succeeds Anthony Cond of Liverpool University Press, becoming the second Wisconsin Press director to lead the organization.
Lloyd’s career spans over 30 years and includes leadership roles at six university presses. He has led initiatives in open educational resources (OER), open access monograph publishing, and digital transformation across multiple institutions. His work includes service on the Project MUSE Advisory Board and several AUPresses committees.
In his inaugural message, Lloyd emphasized the value of collaborative scholarship. He cited the Wisconsin Idea, the principle that education should extend beyond the classroom, as central to the mission of university presses. He described university publishing as a process of “fearless sifting and winnowing” in pursuit of truth.
The new leadership slate also includes Stephanie Williams (President-Elect, Wayne State University Press), Hilary Claggett (Treasurer, Georgetown University Press), and Brent Oberlin (Treasurer-Elect, MIT Press). Additional board appointments and outgoing members were also announced during the May 20 Annual Business Meeting.
Lloyd’s presidency begins amid ongoing shifts in academic publishing, with university presses navigating open access mandates, digital infrastructure needs and the evolving role of scholarly communication.
