The Austrian library consortium Kooperation E-Medien Österreich (KEMÖ) has renewed an open access publishing agreement with MDPI, extending the partnership through the end of 2027. The Medical University of Vienna and the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna, have joined the agreement as new participating institutions.
Under the renewed arrangement, 23 institutions and affiliated researchers will have access to MDPI’s Institutional Open Access Program (IOAP), which provides discounted Article Processing Charges (APCs) across MDPI’s portfolio of more than 480 journals. Institutions selecting centralized funding models will receive higher discounts and tailored invoicing, aimed at reducing administrative complexity associated with open access publishing.
The agreement builds on an existing collaboration between MDPI and KEMÖ that began in 2019. According to MDPI, the renewal reflects ongoing efforts to support regional open access infrastructure in Austria, where KEMÖ plays a coordinating role in licensing electronic resources and promoting open access initiatives.
More than 525 Austrian editorial board members currently collaborate with MDPI, including editors-in-chief and section editors-in-chief. MDPI noted that editorial participation highlights Austria’s role in international scholarly publishing and aligns with national initiatives such as Open Access Monitor Austria.
