Authors Alliance and SPARC publish third white paper on Federal Grants and Institutional IP Policies -

Authors Alliance and SPARC have released the third white paper in the Legal Pathways to Open Access project. The paper, Federal Grants and Institutional IP Policies, examines the longstanding question of authorship in academic scholarly works and outlines how the issue remains legally unsettled.

Without taking a position, the paper illustrates why institutions should account for any of three potential outcomes should future court decisions clarify authorship responsibilities. The paper provides three recommendations for institutions seeking to navigate the complexities of copyright ownership in academic settings.

The Authors Alliance announcement includes links to previous papers in the series, Open Access and U.S. Federal Information Policy and The Legal Basis for U.S. Federal Public Access Mandates. Additional materials are available on the project page.
